Re:Nylon

Nylon has been a crucial material for Prada. The debut of the brand's '84 collection Pocone in its line of bags and accessories was praised worldwide. Miuccia Prada expanded the collection to include nylon dresses for her own label as well as Linea Rossa, the nylon-heavy, buzzbeast-ready diffusion range that Frank Ocean recently dressed himself in at the Met Gala. The renowned Milan-based house has reimagined its iconic nylon bags by transforming them into eco-friendly re:Nylon fabrics. The new collection features six classic styles that include bags for belts, shoulder bag, tote bag, duffle bag and two backpacks -- in repurposed ECONYL fabric that is made from recycled fishing nets, plastics and textile fiber wastes sourced worldwide.

The material that is repurposed is the result of a partnership with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn manufacturer which produces Econyl fabric out of recycled nylon waste that can be reused repeatedly without losing its quality. It's part a larger initiative to transition from virgin nylon to re:Nylon across the entire Prada portfolio in 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. The collection includes six new handbags made of Re:Nylon as well as a pair of ECONYL shoes and boots and a line of apparel made from the same fabric.

To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to produce the series of videos known as "What We Carry" that exposes the cutting-edge technology which is used to make its Re:Nylon bags. The first video includes Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.

With the shift to re:Nylon Prada is undergoing its biggest reduction in virgin nylon use to date, resulting in the reduction of 70,000 barrels of oil per year, The Business of Fashion reports. Furthermore, the move will reduce the company's emissions by 57,000 tonnes. The label has just gone fur-free on its clothing and accessories. This is the most recent sustainability initiative.

Recycled nylon

Recycled nylon does not come without its disadvantages.
